Cheap Flights To Tortola, British Virgin Islands

With only one airport (code EIS, the Terrence B. Lettsome Airport on Beef Island just a few minutes from Roadtown), and that with few flights in and out, cheap flights to Tortola require some serious advance planning. You won't find a direct flight from the United States, Canada, Europe, Britain, or South America to Tortola; every flight to Beef Island must go through Caribbean airports on other islands, most frequently Puerto Rico, but also St. Thomas, Antigua, St. Kitts, or St. Martin.

Most flights in from Puerto Rico use American Eagle, Air SunShine, and Cape Air. You may be able to find cheaper flights from time to time from other airlines or from special charters. A good experienced travel agent who has frequently booked flights to Tortola may be able to find you cheap flights to Tortola using these services.

Remember that when you charter the last leg of your flight you are not limited to airplanes; there are several charter companies in the area using helicopters as well.

If you're the type that prefers doing the fare shopping yourself to find the best deals, there are a host of travel service options for you to choose from. Some of the most well known online travel sites include Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity, Priceline and Cheaptickets  are all online travel sites, and each has its own set of guidelines but can all be very useful in finding a great ticket deal.

Alternatives to Cheap Flights To Tortola

Another option, if you're planning to do some boating in the British Virgin Islands, is to take a flight to Puerto Rico and sail from there. You may be able to get a better rate for the boat, and you'll save around $300 per person on air fare. Boating from Puerto Rico is an especially good idea if you're planning to bareboat in the area. You can rent bareboats in San Juan, and the distance from there to Road Town, Tortola, is just a little over a hundred miles by sea, not too far at all to bareboat. If you go via St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, you can opt for a ferry ride from there to Tortola.

From Beef Island and Road Town, Tortola, you can find charter flights and ferries to the other regional islands Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Peter Island, and Jost van Dyke.

Just as important as finding cheap flights to Tortola is having the proper paperwork ready when you get here. Any vessels entering the harbor must go through BVI Customs and Immigration in Road Town or West End immediately upon arriving.

Valid passports and boat registration papers are also required for entry, including visitors from the United States who had been permitted to visit without a passport prior to January 31, 2008. In certain cases, visitors from other countries may need a visa for entry as well. Tortola's entry requirements are very strictly followed.

Canadian citizens may be able to enter the British Virgin Islands with only a birth certificate and valid photo ID, though a passport is preferable.
