Quito’s Gazebo Restaurant
Quito’s Gazebo Restaurant is a BVI institution – and
justifiably so.
The owner, Quito Rhymer, has, for several years, been
Tortola’s foremost musician and he plays at the restaurant regularly – but
that’s only a part of the Gazebo’s charm.

Recently renovated, and designed, as you might expect from
its name, like an enlarged gazebo directly on the sand, this is a beachside bar
on the shores of Cane Garden Bay. |
During the day, it’s a great place to come and have a
relaxing drink or a tasty lunch of perhaps roasted tomato and feta salad,
marinated conch in a curry mayonnaise or a delicious sandwich. Enjoy a
Bushwacker cocktail – made with four different kinds of rum – or maybe the house
specialty, named after one of Quito’s own songs, a Caribbean Run – coconut rum,
vodka and orange juice; then go beach to the beach to relax for an hour or two.
Quito’s Gazebo, from restaurant to nightclub!
But it’s at night that the Gazebo really kicks off –
becoming arguably the most popular nightclub in Tortola. If you decide to eat
in the upstairs restaurant section then, you’ll enjoy spectacular sunset views
of the yachts at anchor in the bay and still be able to overlook the stage.
Quito plays solo on his guitar each Tuesday and Thursday; mellow, tuneful,
relaxing music.
On Fridays and Saturdays, though, the whole beach comes
alive with the rocking reggae sounds produced by Quito and his band, The Edge.
This is Caribbean music at its very best and the infectious tunes and the
spontaneous enthusiasm of the crowds seem to get even the most sedentary diners
on their feet and joining in.
Quito’s Gazebo Restaurant menu
In the evening, the menu is predominantly Caribbean, with
an emphasis on fresh fish, well prepared. Items included in the menu are often
such things as Blackened yellow fin tuna with a tropical salsa and a Gazebo
seafood combo as well as non-fish temptations such as Pina Colada chicken,
steamed local mutton with tomato and pepper sauce – not forgetting the local
favorites of chicken roti and conch fritters.
On Wednesday afternoons, the Gazebo has its own barbecue
where you can enjoy ribs, chicken roti, Johnnycakes and much, much more.
This is the way a Caribbean holiday should be – superb
cocktails, quality live music, tantalizing local food in a great beach bar.
Quito’s opens daily at 10 am, except for Mondays. You can
telephone them at 284 4954837 or have a look at the website www.quitorymer.com
for the latest information.
Quito is a man born and raised in Cane Garden Bay, with the
warmest of smiles and the friendliest of welcomes. The Gazebo reflects his BVI
philosophy – you wouldn’t want to miss it.
