Tortola's Beautiful Brandywine Beach

Just east of Road Town you'll find pretty Brandywine Beach, a long sandy coast bordering calm swimmable waters, perfect for quiet lazy days and swimming with your children. With seagrape trees close to the road and decent snorkeling just offshore, as well as a mostly-tourist-free atmosphere, Brandywine Beach is one of the most appealing beaches on Tortola.

The sea bottom throughout this pale crescent of beach is mostly sandy, with a little bit of sea grass close to shore in places to add character. You'll find a healthy amount of clean, dredged sand throughout; the BVI government recently rebuilt the beach with sand dredged from harbors throughout the island, so the beach is deep and rich in seashells. If you have kids, they could have great time digging and sifting sand to build a shell collection.

Picnics and events, perfect for Brandywine Beach

Brandywine Beach is one of the most popular spots on Tortola for having picnics and gatherings, partly because it's so convenient to Road Town and partly because it is such a private area you're always assured of having plenty of open area for your event.

Amenities at Brandywine Beach include Brandywine Bay Restaurant, a good upscale place open for dinner only. If you visit Brandywine Beach via boat, this is where you'll moor; there are several mooring balls located out on the restaurant's dock. Out on Half Moon Point, it overlooks both Brandywine Bay and Half Moon Bay, with an excellent view of sunset. The menu changes periodically, but it's primarily Tuscan with a Caribbean flair. Guests are asked to come in casual elegant attire; gentlemen should wear shirts with collars and slacks, and women should be similarly dressed.

You won't find a dive shop here, or a place to rent beach chairs and similar goodies. If you want to be able to lounge in the sun in a chair, you'll need to bring your own. There are no hotels here, but the area's residences do include some rental villas. If you're looking for a private getaway in a public place, a villa near Brandywine Beach might be just the ticket.

Brandywine Beach is only three to ten minutes drive from Road Town, on the Sir Francis Drake Highway. It is common for visitors here to come by boat instead of car. There's good fishing a bit offshore here. Perhaps the ideal reason to visit Brandywine Beach is to give the children a break from being on boat during your cruising and fishing trips, and for you to have a convenient stop at a pleasant, classy restaurant.
