Callalou: Villa In A Park like Estate
One of the nicest villas in Tortola is Callalou, a roomy
house with perfectly-maintained grounds and its own private marina. Located near
Nanny Cay, Callalou is convenient to Long Bay and Brewers Bay, though it's a
long walk. But you should have plenty to do at Callalou and Nanny Cay,
especially if you dock a boat at the private marina.
Callalou gets its name from a popular local soup dish
similar to gumbo, with pork and seafood, spinach, chili pepper, tomato, okra,
and seasonings – a complex mixture w/a confusion of ingredients, much like the
beautiful flower gardens on this estate.
What To Expect At Callalou
Callalou has room for up to five people (smoking okay) in
two air-conditioned bedrooms and the living room. Its pool is one of the largest
on Tortola, and the marina can be seen from the house. It is a gated estate.
Inside, the kitchen is well equipped and built on an open
plan, like the rest of the house. You'll find sliding doors that go across an
entire end of the living room, opening to an alfresco dining area on the
terrace.
In the practical end, a washer and dryer are available near
the kitchen for guests to use. The master bedroom has two queen beds and an
exceptional view of the private marina, while the smaller bedroom overlooks the
garden and has its own refrigerator, microwave, and coffeemaker. The two
bedrooms share a bathroom with shower.
The estate is air conditioned, but there is an extra
charge for running it during the day (if you open the doors, the ocean breezes
cool the house quite well). A charcoal barbecue grill is available for guest
use. Unusual amenities include a pair of binoculars for your use and a free
welcome bottle of rum. Rates also include maid service once per week.
Callalou must be rented for a minimum of four days, seven
during the Christmas season. It is available only from November through June.
The managers live on site in a house well removed from the main estate building,
and the area is also inhabited by a dog and cat belonging to the owners.
Callalou's Special Features
The grounds are what make Callalou so special. Once past
the gate, you'll see the parklike lawns that extend to perfect palm trees and
tropical flowers blooming in a riot of colors. The park extends throughout the
estate, eventually rolling down to the water's edge and the quiet private dock
attached to the estate.
The pool is 50 feet, huge by the standards of Tortola.
There isn't a private beach, but a short walk to Nanny Cay gets you to one,
where swimming and snorkeling are popular pastimes. Considering what you get at
Callalou, the price is very affordable.
If you're also renting a small boat while you visit Tortola,
Callalou makes a perfect base from which to launch sailing trips throughout the
British Virgin Islands. Talk to the management to find out what your boat's
specs need to be for the private dock.
Callalou is a fifteen minute drive from Long Bay, Brewers
Bay, and Cane Garden Bay, and a half-hour from the airport. It is walking
distance to the shops and restaurants of Nanny Cay and its little beach, and a
short drive away from many other shops and restaurants a little further out.
