Tortola Camping
If you’re interested in a Tortola camping holiday, then, please, read this section through very carefully.
Now, obviously we like to think that you read everything on here carefully, but it really is vital that prospective campers on Tortola know exactly what to
expect.
You see, many people who go to the Brewer’s Bay Camp Ground on Tortola absolutely adore the place – and we’ll look at exactly why in a minute. However, if you’re one of those campers who likes their campsite to have the facilities of a top hotel and your tents to be equipped like top of the range camper vans – then you’re going to be very disappointed.
Let’s examine the site in detail, then, so that you can make the correct choice.
The Brewer’s Bay Camp Ground is on a truly beautiful stretch of beach about 15 minutes of winding road away from Road Town.
The setting is magnificent; a fabulous beach with a huge coral reef and a primitive, rugged aura of rocky cliffs and a canopy of palms,
sea grapes and almonds behind you. There are 15 prepared tents – with beds and linen provided - and also 15 bare sites available, all right on the beach. The site can be contacted on 2844943463.
There are cook out areas, showers and flush toilets and, although you will get a roomy platform tent with an enclosed porch area for the propane stove, lantern and so on, don’t expect a lot of ‘frills’
– it’s cold water showers and you’ll also get a table, wash bin, gas lamp, gas stove with two burners and a cooler. In addition, there’s an authentic red British phone box on the beach as well as a beach bar and restaurant serving good local food – it’s more of a lunch place but they can do evening meals if you wish.
You’ll probably find that most of the other campers there are people who have been coming for years
– loving the friendly, carefree atmosphere of the place. On Friday evenings there’s a fabulous communal fish fry and on Sundays there is a well-attended barbecue.
Staying here will mean you can enjoy spectacular snorkeling, a beautiful secluded beach and you’ll probably feel as if you’re in Pirates of the Caribbean when you settle down for the night. If you want to get around, though, you’ll definitely need to have a hire car so that you can collect groceries and sample some of the other parts of
Tortola.
I’m sure you’re getting the idea about Brewer’s Bay Camp Ground now – those who love it, absolutely adore it; it’s rustic and basic but the campers and locals are all so friendly and the surroundings are so idyllic that it all becomes a wonderful, natural experience. But if your idea of camping is a five star, four-roomed palace on the beach with all of life’s luxuries close at hand – then you’re not going to find that here.
Brewer’s Bay is the only Tortola camping site, although there are also sites at White Bay on Jost Van Dyke and Lobolly Bay on Anegada. Camping is forbidden except in the designated areas, and the prohibition is strictly enforced, as part of the way in which the beaches are kept clean for all visitors.
So, if you’re contemplating a Tortola camping vacation, Brewer’s Bay is definitely the only place to go!
