Fort Burt Restaurant

The Fort Burt Restaurant is one of the most popular of all Tortola’s fine restaurants – and it’s easy to understand why that is.

Fort Burt was originally constructed in the 17th century by the Dutch, in order to protect Road Town but then, in 1776, the fort was rebuilt, and renamed, by the English.  William Burt was the governor of the Leeward Islands and the fort served as an imposing reminder of the British presence in the area.

Today, it is equally imposing and it is worthy of a visit just to see the thick walls and ramparts of the fort, set in pleasant, fragrant gardens and spectacularly overlooking Road Town Harbor.  Although the Fort was transformed into a hotel nearly 50 years ago, the remains of the military past are an integral part of its eye-catching setting.

But to really make the most of your visit, then pay a call into the restaurant while you’re here.

Let me quote to you from a customer review of the Fort Burt Restaurant taken from ‘The Caribbean Edge’:  ‘This restaurant had the best food at the most reasonable prices that I encountered anywhere.  The service is impeccable, the meals delicious, and the view of the harbor from the veranda is delightful.’  There’s nothing really that I could add to that – it covers everything!

But let’s examine the food here in a little more detail, so you know what that reviewer was getting so excited about.

Well, the dinner menu is changed on a very regular basis but is primarily Caribbean food with American and Continental influences and classics included.  Some of their highly praised dishes include – amongst the starters, a hot shrimp cocktail, phenomenal eggs benedict and sensational sizzling mushrooms; then, amongst the mains, the local lamb, several different jerk chicken dishes including a highly original and really flavorsome jerk chicken linguine, spiny lobster and a grilled romaine salad.  Additionally, there is a good quality wine list for you to choose the perfect accompaniment to your meal – or a good selection of beers, if you prefer.

Wednesday evenings at the Fort Burt tend to be a little bit special as that’s the night they serve up their well-loved Caribbean Buffet – so don’t eat too much during the day because you’ll need plenty of room; there’s so much you’ll want to try.

The restaurant itself is both spacious and elegant and you can elect to eat either in the dining room itself or on the veranda.  A reservation will ensure that you get a window table indoors with a great view of the ocean and booking in advance is recommended because this charming restaurant is extremely popular with locals, expats and holidaymakers alike.  The atmosphere at Fort Burt is always great and the service manages to tread that fine line between efficiency and friendliness – always a sign of a well-run place.

The Fort Burt Restaurant is open daily from 8am and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.  To make your reservation, you can telephone 2844942587 – and then prepare yourself to be overwhelmed by some superb food and spectacular views.
