Kayaking in Tortola

Kayaking in Tortola is just about as good as it gets.

Imagine yourself, as a newcomer to handling kayaks, enjoying one of the host of different bays protected by reefs – remarkably quiet, incredibly scenic, perhaps surrounded by parrotfish - and learning your skills, before moving on, ready to challenge the more open water.

Novices can revel in the enjoyment of many bays, perfectly protected by the reefs outside them. Or, as an experience handler of kayaks, just think for a while of the thrill of sea kayaking to different islands, where you can relax on the beach, savor some fantastic sea food, and then paddle back again.

Using the prevailing winds and currents, you can paddle from island to island enjoying the spectacular sunsets from your view from the sea.

Sea kayaks, less maneuverable than their whitewater counterparts but built for greater comfort and easier straight-line paddling, can be hired at many places in and around Road Town – Marina Cay, Boardsailing BVI, Last Stop Sports at Nanny’s Cay Red Shed are just a few examples.  The kayaks for hire will be fiberglass, with foot-controlled rudders and you’ll be able to get any necessary safety equipment such as towing lines, pumps, repair kits, spare paddles and cell phones.   There are one, two and even a few three person kayaks available.  You might also want to think about joining a mini-expedition with other kayaks- this might be a more secure way of trying your first open water crossings if you’ve not tried one before.

Tortola is an ideal warm winter vacation spot and sea kayaking in Tortola is a great way to explore the crystalline Caribbean waters surrounding it; waters so clear that you can see the sea bed 60 feet below you.

So, if you’re new to sea kayaking and want to take it up and try it in a warm, scenic winter environment – Tortola kayaking is for you.  There are local, experienced kayakers who will be able to make sure that you know exactly what you’re doing before you go out into the open waters. Now’s your chance to learn to execute the perfect Eskimo Roll, in warm, clear and safe water!

On the other hand, if you’re an experienced sea kayaker and you are looking to explore one of the most beautiful sea areas in the world – then get yourself here.  This is as good as it gets.
