Maria’s by the Sea is a real Tortola success story. What was once a small local inn, owned by native Tortolan
Maria, has been totally rebuilt with some spectacular ocean side rooms and has
become a popular meeting place for international diplomats as well as visitors
and sailors. Despite the changes, though, Maria herself is still very
much a ‘hands on’ owner and manager, making sure that the restaurant here
continues to provide the excellent local Caribbean cuisine that she first served
up well over 30 years ago. Maria’s by the Sea can be found next to the BVI
Government buildings, just down from the cruise ship dock and overlooking Road
Harbor – so you’re within an easy walk of the shops but also isolated from
the main traffic of Road Town. Needless to say, in a beautiful location such as this, the
views from the restaurant tables are simply stunning and the menu, for both
lunch and dinner, has a wide variety to choose from – and all the food is
freshly cooked to order. The food at Maria’s reflects her background but has
developed an international flavor over the years. Consequently, visitors can still sample Maria’s famous
conch chowder and home-baked rolls straight from the oven but they can also
indulge in delicious lobster, steak, fish and, another specialty, liver.
