The Tamarind Club Restaurant
The Tamarind Club is a small, intimate hotel in Josiah’s
Bay, on the north east of Tortola.
This is one of those restaurants that, although it is an
integral part of a hotel, is still very much worthy of a visit even if you’re
not a resident.
While compiling these reviews, I have, obviously, leaned
very much on my own experiences in Tortola but, in order to make sure my point
of view doesn’t become jaundiced in any way, I have also spent a lot of time
looking at those websites that give travelers’ reviews about places they’ve
been to on vacation. Seldom have I
found anywhere that has had such a positive feedback as the restaurant at the
Tamarind Club. People have posted
such comments as ‘the best ribs and baked beans we ever had’ – about the
Wednesday night barbecue- and ‘Even if you don’t stay here, a visit to the
restaurant is a MUST.’
The Tamarind Club menu
A look at some of the dishes on the menu will give some
indication of why the award winning chef has been able to wow so many people.
Amongst the appetizers you’ll find ‘Tamarind’s Creamy Seafood
Chowder – tuna, mahi mahi, snapper, salmon, shrimp, basa and maybe some other
fish too – with hot and potent pepper wine on the side’ and ‘Soft
mozzarella topped with hot roasted tomatoes and drizzled with a little of Stan
over the road’s hot chili oil’. Entrees regularly offer ‘Filet Mignon Pepper Crusted in a
cream and cognac sauce’ as well as ‘jerk roasted rack of lamb with tamarind
and mango sauce’. And who could
not be tempted by the prospect of finishing the meal with a ‘dark chocolate
mousse marbled with cream and Mount Gay Extra Old Rum – with inexplicable but
delicious little lumps of chocolate in it’?
Well, certainly not me, for one!
The food could be showcased anywhere in the world but, as
befits this homely restaurant, is totally and completely unpretentious.
If you would prefer the dishes less elaborately cooked, then just ask –
the chef won’t get all Gordon Ramsey on you but will give you exactly what you
want to eat.
The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner
every day. Their Sunday brunch is a
real treat – and it includes a complimentary Mimosa or their famous Bloody
Caesar.
I could go on for hours about the Tamarind Club Restaurant
– the atmosphere of the place is so completely stress free and relaxing and
the food is totally wonderful – and at very reasonable prices.
Only 7 minutes from the airport, 12 minutes from Road Town and situated
on one of Tortola’s best surfing beaches, there really is no excuse for not
putting the Tamarind Club on your list of places to go to when you’re in
Tortola.
