The Pub, Tortola
Ask almost any Brit and they’ll tell you there’s
nothing like a good old-fashioned English pub.
And, thank goodness, The Pub in Tortola is absolutely
nothing like a ‘good old-fashioned English pub’! The food is better; the weather is better; the view is
better; and the beer isn’t warm and the color of gravy.
No, The Pub in Tortola is what ‘the good old-fashioned
English pub’ should be like but seldom is.
True, there are pool tables and a good game of darts –
but there’s also internet availability as well, to really bring us up to date.
And, like the traditional pub, it’s got a great atmosphere – it
attracts many of the island’s yachties and local sports teams who come in for
some ‘rehydration’ after their games. What’s
more there are in excess of 25 different kinds of beer available (probably even
with one the color of gravy) and, this being the Caribbean, a spectacular
selection of rums to try and work your way through.
The Pub is a happening place, make no mistake.
This is especially true on a Friday night – Live Music Night – and
during Happy Hour – 5 until 7.
The Pub can be found housed in a low-slung wooden building
on a narrow strip known as Harbour Road. If
you’re sailing here, you can dinghy right up to the dock at the Fort Burt
Marina. Despite its somewhat
barn-like interior, the atmosphere can be really electric inside, and there’s
a rambling veranda built on piers over the sea that make the most of the Pub’s
waterside situation.
But let’s not forget the food at The Pub – because
it really is worth remembering.
They serve breakfasts and lunches – some terrific burgers and salads
included here – and some spectacular dishes for dinner.
Some of the best choices include Bahamian fritters, Caesar and Greek
salads, and an amazing prime rib of beef; but the locals will tell you that the
chef’s real specialties are his
Jerk Chicken and his ‘Combo Platter’ – with spare ribs, chicken and fried
shrimp. You can also get fresh
lobster here and the chef always prepares a fresh fish ‘Catch of the Day’.
The Pub is a great place to spend a few entertaining
hours – and to eat a good meal. Opening
hours are from 7 am until late – but the food stops at 10 pm .
On Sundays opening time is at 5 pm.
They accept Visa, Mastercard and Amex and can be contacted for
reservations on 2844942608.
If you’re really fortunate when you’re in The Pub,
there might be a few Brits in there – and they’ll go home talking about this
great pub they went to in the Caribbean!
