Get To know Tortola!
Tortola is the largest of the 60 or so islands that make up
the British Virgin Islands – but don’t let that fact persuade you that it
must, therefore, be overcrowded and hectic.
 |
|
Far from it!
After all, there are less than 22,000 residents of all the
islands combined so, even with quite a few uninhabited, that still leaves plenty
of free space for everyone.
|
Tortola represents Caribbean living at its most laid back
and most accessible. You can
delight in the idyllic, palm-shaded white-sand beaches –often completely
alone; you can revel in the opportunities for unrivaled swimming, snorkeling,
fishing or scuba diving; you can discover the historical past of the island by
visiting The Dungeon at Lockwood Pond, Fort Burt, Fort Recovery or the Callwood
Rum Distillery; you can wander down Main Street in Road Town and lazily inspect
the West Indian spices, jams, soaps and jewelry before buying your mementos; or
you can just do nothing!
If you’re thinking of a first ever Caribbean vacation,
Tortola is a perfect choice – the language is English, the currency the dollar
and there’s none of the aggressive tourism of some of the other islands.
Life here moves at a really different pace.....extremely slow.
