Tortola Sailing adventures are incredible!
Tortola sailing charters draw the most visitors to the
island, and it’s easy to see why.
The locals like to claim that the British Virgin Islands – more
commonly simply referred to as BVI – are the center of the sailing world.
Well, it certainly seems that way at Spring Regatta. The week begins with the Welcoming Party at the Nanny Cay Marina on the
Monday evening of the first week in April, which is followed by three days of
destination cruising and some racing.

The
really serious racing starts at the end of the week, though, and the Friday,
Saturday and Sunday are the competitive highlights.
And, if you can’t make the Spring Regatta
Tortola sailing event, you’ll find there’s plenty
of others in Tortola and Virgin Gorda, throughout the year – ranging from
Firecracker 500 Pursuit races to Multi-hull ‘Cat fights’. The highlight of
the Tortola sailing calendar is the BVI Spring regatta, which has
developed since its inception in 1972 into the Caribbean’s largest
sailing event. Centered
around Road Town, and hosted by the Nanny Cay
and Bitter End Yacht Clubs, it is a week of non-stop racing action and, of
course, non-stop partying. |
Tortola Sailing-The Perfect Conditions
The consistent trade winds, the incredible turquoise Caribbean
waters and the year-round sunshine – together with the proximity of so many
islands to explore – make Tortola a paradise for new sailors or the most
experienced. There are glorious
protected anchorages in delightfully named, isolated spots – Brandywine Bay
and Soper’s Hole, for instance. Then
there’s the possibility of sailing across to, say, Cooper Island or Virgin
Gorda, where you can drop anchor surrounded by unsurpassable natural beauty and
then go ashore for some fresh lobster, spicy goat, West Indian roti or Johnny
cakes.
Tortola sailing charter companies offer an abundance of choice.
Sailors will have everything to choose from here.
You can charter almost any type of boat – catamarans, monohull
sailboats, power boats, roomy schooners - and you can hire them either crewed or
uncrewed. Everything is geared up
for your perfect sailing vacation.
My sailing vessel of choice by far is the
catamaran! They do really well in the 'Island hopping' environment of the
BVI's.

One of the great things about the cat design is the fact that they can manage
shallow 'reef' areas better than some monohulls with deep keels. My favorite
aspect is the stability of the catamarans versus other types of sailboats. I
don't like a lot of pitching and rolling while out to sea (watch me turn
green)..the catamarans are great for smoothing out the ride! |
Your host out for a sail
(good thing there's someone else on board that knows what they're doing)!
Even in the Caribbean, the people of Tortola are known for
their warmth, friendliness and hospitality, and they, along with the blue
Caribbean waters and the clear Caribbean sky, will ensure that your sailing
experiences here will be absolutely unforgettable.

After you've had a chance to sail around for a while,
there's nothing like pulling into a quiet cove for a swim and some lunch! There
are plenty of beaches right on Tortola to check out, or you can sail for less
than an hour and reach a nearby island to explore. Either way it's a definite
'win-win' proposition! |
